Mercury Contamination of Aquatic Ecosystems

چکیده
Introduction Mercury has been well known as an environmental pollutant for several decades. As early as the 1950’s it was established that emissions of mercury to the environment could have serious effects on human health. These early studies demonstrated that fish and other wildlife from various ecosystems commonly attain mercury levels of toxicological concern when directly affected by mercury-containing emissions from human-related activities. Human health concerns arise when fish and wildlife from these ecosystems are consumed by humans.

Mercury Contamination of Aquatic Ecosystems
Mercury has been well known as an environmental pollutant for several decades. As early as the 19501s it was established that emissions of mercury to the environment could have serious effects on human health. These early studies demonstrated that fish and other wildlife from various ecosystems commonly attain mercury levels of toxicological concern when directly affected by mercury-containing ...
متن کاملRegulation of Artisanal Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) in Ghana and Indonesia as Currently Implemented Fails to Adequately Protect Aquatic Ecosystems
Artisanal small scale gold mining (ASGM) operations are largely unregulated, informal and transient. Rudimentary mining and processing techniques used in ASGM often result in degraded environmental, safety, health and social conditions. ASGM requires permanent sources of water, placing most operations close to natural water bodies. Until recently, the impact on these environments has been large...
متن کاملA National Pilot Study of Mercury Contamination of Aquatic Ecosystems along Multiple Gradients
Mercury (Hg) contamination of aquatic ecosystems is a global problem. However, databases for Hg in environmental samples at regional-to-national scales are few, especially for multi-media sampling that include determination of methylmercury (MeHg). A national scale pilot study to examine relations of total Hg (HgT) and MeHg in water, sediment and fish was conducted in the summer and fall of 199...
متن کاملAssessment of Mercury Bioaccumulation in Zebra Cichlid (Cichlasoma Nigrofasciatum) Exposed to Sublethal Concentrations of Permethrin
Background: Aquatic ecosystems are frequently subjected to contamination by toxic heavy metals and pesticides, yet very little is known about the influence of pesticides on bioaccumulation of heavy metals in aquatic organisms. Mercury is a toxic metal with no known biological benefit to organisms. Bioavailability of mercury in aquatic environments depends on biological and non-biological parame...
متن کاملMercury in the northern crayfish, Orconectes virilis (Hagen), in New England, USA.
Biologists and policy makers continue to seek environmental correlates of mercury bioavailability in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we assessed the effects of drainage basin, habitat type, size class, and sex on mercury concentrations in the northern crayfish, Orconectes virilis (Hagen). Drainage basin, habitat type, and size class had significant effects on mercury concentration in crayfis...
